About our firm

S. Selsberg Law was founded on the idea of providing high quality legal services at a reasonable price. Steve Selsberg has practiced law for over 35 years. He started as a law clerk for the Honorable James DeAnda in Houston, Texas in 1986, and thereafter was a partner at several global firms. Steve values his relationships with his clients as his top priority and in 2015 decided to continue his practice with the same skills and integrity but at a lower cost.

Steve focuses on commercial litigation, often representing companies and individuals from Mexico and Latin America in the state and federal courts throughout the United States. While Steve focuses on commercial disputes, Steve has substantial experience in other litigation practice areas, such as arbitration, labor and employment, IP, product liability, personal injury, corporate governance, and securities litigation. Steve strives to provide solutions to commercial diputes in a cost effective manner, whether it be early in a case or through trial and appeal.

Education

  • Graduated cum laude from Georgetown University with an A.B. in Government.
  • Graduated from law school at Washington University in St. Louis.
  • Served as Executive Articles Editor for the Journal of Urban and Contemporary Law at Washington University.

Federal Government Roles

  • For the Office of the Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon.
  • As an intern for a Congressman from Wisconsin.
  • Clerked for the Honorable James DeAnda in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

Notable Professional Engagements

  • Early in his career, Steve represented the purchasers of the James Coney Island restaurant chain, when it was purchased out of bankruptcy.
  • Shortly thereafter, Steve represented General Electric Capital in a securities fraud lawsuit filed by over 2000 individual plaintiffs in Eagle Pass, Texas. The trial, which General Electric Capital won, was documented in the Wall Street Journal.
  • Then Steve spent several years representing Philip Morris in individual smoking and health cases throughout Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana and New Mexico.
  • One of the cases Steve defended was filed by the original “Marlboro Man.”
  • During his time representing Philip Morris, Steve argued numerous cases in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit on issues such as statutory construction, removal and preemption.
  • Steve headed up a team that defended Carlos Slim Helu, Grupo Carso and Grupo Sanborns in the post trial motions and state court appeals following a $454 million jury verdict against the defendants arising out of the purchase of CompUSA superstores.
  • The court of appeals reversed the judgment, in total, against the defendants and the Texas Supreme Court affirmed. At the same time, Steve defended Carlos Slim Helu and several of his affiliates in a tortious interference claim in Harris County, Texas.
  • Steve defended and obtained the dismissal of two clergy cases filed in Los Angeles, California against Cardinal Norberto Carrera Rivera and his former diocese in Mexico.
  • Steve later defended America Movil in a claim for $900 million in compensatory damages plus punitive damages filed in state court in New York by the prior owner of an Ecuadorian cell phone company.
  • Steve represented ICA in a federal lawsuit in Miami, which was dismissed based on the doctrine of forum non conviens.
  • Steve has represented Grupo Mexico and its affiliates in litigation in the USA, including the independent board members of its Southern Copper subsidiary in Delaware Chancery Court.
  • Steve has represented Grupo Carso and its subsidiaries and affiliates throughout the United States for over 20 years.
